As word spread on February 28–March 1, 2026 that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed in a joint U.S.–Israeli military operation, Iranians’ responses revealed deep and complex feelings — from jubilant celebration and relief to grief, confusion and fear about what comes next. 

1. Spontaneous Street Celebrations and Joy 

Across multiple Iranian cities, including Tehran, Karaj, Shiraz, Isfahan and more, videos verified by news agencies showed people cheering, honking car horns, playing loud music, dancing and even setting off fireworks late into the night. Many residents leaned out of windows, gathered on rooftops and erupted into applause on hearing the news. 

One resident in Tehran described hearing whistles and honks filling the air, while others shared posts on social media expressing simultaneous joy and disbelief. Many waved or referenced images of protesters killed in recent anti-government movements — a poignant symbol of both celebration and remembered suffering. 

Even before official confirmation, the scenes of jubilation began late on Saturday night, with crowds embracing the moment as a historic shift after decades of repression. 

2. Emotional Turmoil and Disbelief 

While celebrations were widespread, many Iranians expressed shock or scepticism, saying the news felt unreal until they saw verified evidence. Some social media users shared mixed emotions — crying, laughing and screaming all at once, describing the moment as overwhelming after years of hardship under the regime.

Widespread strikes triggered panic in cities, with people rushing to stock up on essentials, withdraw money and consider leaving urban areas amid fears of further conflict or reprisals. Roads were blocked, gasoline stations were crowded, and schools were shut down amid the chaos. 

Some Iranians worried that foreign military intervention — even if it toppled the regime’s leader — could lead to worse devastation in their homeland, drawing parallels to other countries in the region that suffered prolonged instability.
